Create, duplicate, and delete entities
You create, duplicate, and delete entities with the buttons at the top of the HIERARCHY panel or with keyboard shortcuts. This page explains how to work with entities manually and how to undo.
The tests on this page were done in the oasisw.ai editor with one new project (macOS Chrome) on 2026-10-29. Unless noted otherwise, each action was tested once.
Before you start
- Open a scene in the editor. The first scene of a new project contains
Camera,Light,Box, andPlane. - For how entities and components relate, see Projects, scenes, entities, components, and assets.
Do it in the editor
Create
- Click + in the HIERARCHY panel header. A menu opens.
- Choose what to create. An empty entity is Entity at the top. Primitive shapes are under 3D.
- The new entity appears at the bottom of HIERARCHY and is selected. The right panel switches to ENTITY.
| Menu | Items |
|---|---|
| Entity | An empty entity with no components. The menu shows the shortcut ⌘E (Ctrl+E on Windows) |
| 2D | Entities for 2D |
| 3D | Render, Box, Capsule, Cone, Cylinder, Plane, Sphere, GSplat |
| Audio, Camera, Light | Sound, camera, and light entities |
| Particle System | Particle entity |
| User Interface | Entities for on-screen text and buttons |
An entity created with 3D → Sphere had Position 0, 0, 0. The default scene's Plane is also at height 0, so the bottom half of the sphere appeared buried in the floor. For how to move it after creating it, see Move, rotate, and scale entities.
If you click + with an entity selected, the new entity is created as a child of the selected entity. Right-clicking an entity name and choosing New Entity also creates it as a child of that entity (1 run each). To create one at the top level, deselect first. For how to change the parent, see HIERARCHY panel.
Duplicate
- Select the entity you want to duplicate.
- Press Ctrl+D or click the duplicate button in the HIERARCHY header (to the right of +).
- An entity with the same name appears right below the original and is selected. Its position and components are also the same as the original.
The duplicate sits in the same place as the original, so in the viewport they look like one. The name is the same too, so rename it right away in the Name field of ENTITY. Scripts sometimes find entities by name, and if two have the same name, you can't tell which one will be found.
Delete
- Select the entity you want to delete.
- Press Delete or click the trash can button in the HIERARCHY header.
- It's deleted immediately, with no confirmation.
Undo
Click Undo in the left toolbar (hovering shows Undo (Ctrl+Z)) or press Ctrl+Z. Redo is Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y.
The name of the last action (Add Entity, Duplicate Entities, Delete Entities) appears on the right side of the bottom bar. Before undoing, you can use this name to check what will be reverted.
Let the AI do it
Creating or deleting a single entity is faster by hand. An AI prompt takes 20 to 40 seconds to reach the plan card and a few minutes to complete, and it uses credits. Placing many copies of an entity according to a rule (such as scattering 10 stars over the floor) is better left to the AI. In that case, include the count and names in your prompt. For the principles, see Principles for writing prompts.
Check the result
- Check in HIERARCHY that the entity appeared or disappeared.
- If you duplicated, check after renaming that HIERARCHY doesn't still have two entities with the same name.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| You clicked an entity in HIERARCHY, but the right panel switched to SETTINGS | Clicking an already selected entity deselects it (observed twice) | Click once more |
| You duplicated, but you can't see the extra entity in the viewport | The duplicate overlaps the original in the same place | Change the duplicate's Position |
