How a web engine differs

OasisW isn't a program you install; it's an editor you open in the browser. Your projects and assets live on the OasisW server, not on your computer, and games also run in the browser. Because of this, a few habits from other engines don't carry over as is. This page collects those points.

Installation and file location

  • You don't install the editor. Sign in to oasisw.ai in your browser to see your project list, then click a project to open the editor. For supported browsers, see Browser and device requirements.
  • There is no project folder on your computer. Upload assets in the ASSETS panel (Upload files). To download the whole project as a file, use Export (.zip) as described in Import and export projects.
  • Projects and assets use the workspace's storage. At the time of testing, the free limit for a personal workspace was 1 GB, and assets, published apps, code, and checkpoints all counted toward it (Workspaces).

There is no save button

Values you change manually and changes the AI makes are saved to the server right away. There is no step where you save the scene with Ctrl+S. Instead, to keep a point you can return to, use a checkpoint. For details, see Autosave and Save and restore your work with checkpoints.

Games run in a new tab

Instead of switching the editor into Play mode, ▶ Launch opens the game in a new tab. This means the following are different.

  • Values you change in the game tab aren't kept in the editor. Change values in the editor, then refresh the game tab.
  • A script's console.log output appears in the browser developer tools Console of the game tab, not in the editor's CONSOLE (Debugging).
  • If you Launch right after changing a field, the game sometimes runs with the old value. In our test, a game opened 2 seconds later had the old value, and opening it again picked up the change (1 run).

You publish with a URL

Instead of exporting the game as an executable, publishing gives you a URL that opens in a browser. Recipients don't install anything; they just open the URL (Publish your game). You can also download it as a bundle of website files and host it yourself (Download a build).

What the browser decides

  • Sound: Browsers usually block sound until the user clicks the page once. For background music, it's safest to start it after a click on a start screen (Add sound).
  • Key input: The game screen must have focus to receive key input. After opening the game tab, click the screen once (Run with Launch).
  • Graphics device: RENDERING in SETTINGS has Device Order (default WebGL 2.0), Enable WebGPU, and Enable WebGL 2.0. Which device renders in which browser: Pending Test rendering devices per device
  • Several people at once: When several people open the same project, they edit it together (Real-time collaboration).
